Merci Suárez Changes Gears
by Meg Medina
Merci Suarez Changes Gears by Meg Medina is one of the best books I have ever read. It is a story of family support, finding real friends and trying to fit in. It is a story of dealing with changes, both in school and at home, and growing older and gaining more responsibilities. Merci has to accept that her grandfather, Lolo, will not get better from having Alzheimer’s Disease, and learns that she should try to make the most of her time with him in the present rather than worrying the future. Merci is a girl that is very real, and doesn’t have to pretend to be loved and accepted. Merci’s family is a very close and large family, and it is not perfect, but it is one that is filled with love. This book is something that I and many other children (and adults!) can have fun with seeing ourselves in the characters, and enjoy reading along as Merci adapts as her life changes and discovers more about who she is.
